Dunbar Poets ended their 4 year hiatus from the Class 1A state championship game today in the semifinal round of the Maryland State Tournament. The Poets rolled over Clear Spring out of Washington County 69-43 at the Xfinity Center in College Park Maryland. It was a dominant performance by the East Baltimore City team who never trailed at any point during the game. Senior guard Dashawn Philip led the Poets with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Junior Malik McCormick finished with 18 points and 3 steals. Sophomore Jamal West also had an impressive performance with 19 rebounds to go along with 8 points. Head Coach Cyrus Jones contributed much of today’s victory to the Poets defense. The Blazer went 0-13 from behind the arc and shot a dismal 28% from the field.
The road to the 1A Final hasn’t been easy one for the Poets. Dunbar is playing without major contributors Qualil Giles and Deron Hunt for most of the backend of the season due to injuries. Poets will face another major challenge Saturday against defending 1A champs Fairmont Heights. The Hornets defeated Patterson Mill 72-49. Tip-off is at 1pm.
