Boys Latin Baseball team walked away with 2 impressive victories Saturday at the Third Annual Xander Katona Memorial Holiday Tournament. The tournament included two of Baltimore City Public Schools top baseball programs, Poly Engineers and Baltimore City College. The Lakers defeated the defending Baltimore City champions, City Knights in the first game 12-8.
The second game Boys Latin jumped out to a 4 run lead before Poly scored their first run in the bottom of the 2nd (4-1). The Engineers rallied off 4 unanswered runs in the 3rd and 4th innings before first baseman Michael Heck’s solo homerun to right field gave Poly a 6-5 lead. The two teams battled back and forth in the 5th inning. Boys Latin scored 3 runs at the top of the 5th (8-6 BL), but Poly produced 2 runs of their own at the bottom to knot the game 8-8. Headed into the 6th inning, Lakers Head Coach Greenwell brought in his ace pitcher Edmund “Ned” Ruffin in relief. The 6-5 senior shutout Poly for the rest of the game, as the Lakers would go on to win 12-8 over Poly.
The Xander Katona Memorial Holiday Tournament was started 3 years ago after Poly Alumni Alexander Katona died suddenly from heart failure. Alexander was a manager for the Engineers before moving on to study at the University of Miami.
