Sotir Field in Roland Park- In a game which can present a season full of highs and lows, the Gilman contingent experienced both the first two games of the season. Saturday afternoon, the Greyhounds were shut out at home by Loyola 56-0. This is after Gilman rolled over over Riverdale Baptist 47-28 the week prior.
The Dons led 13-0 in the first half after QB Jordan Moore scored twice from 34 and 2 yards out. But it was Loyola’s (1-0) 43 point second half performance that ultimately put Gilman (1-1) away. Michah Robinson started the second half onslaught with a 60 yard touchdown run on a Moore screen pass (20-0 3Q).
The Hounds saw pressure from Loyola’s defense throughout the game, which limited any consistency on the offensive side of ball. Gilman were without star running back Ke’Yon Torain and Jermaine Conyers. Both players suffered injuries in the first half and never returned in the game.
Special teams were a major factor in the third quarter for the Dons. Besides Kaire Umoja 2 yard TD run, Loyola blocked two punts in the quarter and returned both for touchdowns to extend their lead to 40-0 (Kyle Powell 18 yards & Phillip Florenzo 2 yards). Loyola added to more scores in the fourth, Moore rushed for a 2 yard touchdown and Joshua Buck scored from 22 yards out.
Loyola will attempt to start the season 2-0 as they host Riverdale Baptist next week. Gilman looking to get back in the winning column on the road against Episcopal.
