A 34-0 lost to Calvert Hall last year left a bitter taste on the pallets of Mt St Joe football team. The #8 Gaels used the game as motivation Saturday afternoon in their 21-7 win over the #5 Cardinals. Mt. St. Joe scored 21 unanswered points in the first half. Standout Receiver Donte Thornton scored the first touchdown on a 55 yard strike from QB Billy Atkins. (7-0 Gaels 1Q). Gaels running back Marlowe Wax Jr added 2 short distance rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 21-0 at the half.
Second half, Calvert Hall mirrored a mash unit losing starting running back Sean Tucker to a injury. The Cardinals already were without senior Quarterback Mike Campbell who suffered a knee injury against Riverdale Baptist. Before the game was over the Cardinals were down to their third string quarterback and lost two offensive lineman along the way. Junior running back Ray Glass kept the game somewhat interesting after a 1 yard TD run late win the third quarter (21-7 MSJ 3Q). The Cardinals were able to kept Mt St Joe out the end zone for the rest of the game but couldn’t mustard enough offense to come from behind.
Gales RB/LB Marlowe Wax Jr and WR Donte Thornton recorded standout performances during the contest. Wax posted 2 touchdowns in over 90 yards rushing and 1 interception. Thornton had 140 yards in passing receptions and 1 touchdown.
