Mervo (8-2) Sophomore Garnett Stewart was the unsung hero in the Mustangs 12-8 victory over Edmondson-Westside (7-3). With less than 3 minutes to play and deep in Mustangs territory, Stewart made a clutch third down over the shoulder catch on Edmondson’s sideline. The play gave the 2016 Baltimore City Division I Champions 4 extra plays, the ball on the other side of the 50, and helped kill the clock. Edmondson received the ball with less than a minute in the contest. But it was to much ground for the Red Storm to make up against a stingy Mustangs defense.
All Mervo’s points were produced in the second quarter. Junior Corey Peterkin scored the first 6 points on the receiving end of a Carlos Davis pass. Mustangs added 6 more with seconds left in the half on a 1 yard TD run. Edmondson’s defense pitched a shutout in the third and fourth quarter. Momentum began to swing in the Red Storm’s favor after linebacker Lauron Taylor returned a fumble recovery 30 plus yards to the end zone (12-6). Edmondson’s DeShawn Ruffin’s leaping catch completed the 2 point conversion (12-8 4Q). Unfortunately, The Red Storm was unable to muster up another touchdown to win the game.
Stay tune for playoff seeding tomorrow!
