Round 1 in the Books

Round one of the MPSSAA Boys High School basketball playoffs are complete. Local schools need just 3 more wins to punch their ticket in the semifinals at the Xfinity Center in College Park. Below is brief review of the first round outcomes and second round matchups.

MARYLAND CLASS 1A

There was one slight upset among the Baltimore Area schools in the first round of the playoffs. In the 1A North bracket, 6th seed Western Tech defeated 3rd seed Loch Raven 70-68 in overtime. The Wolverine advanced to play #2 seed Pikesville Monday at 5:30 pm.

#4 seed Douglass vs #5 seed Forest Park was supposed to be a marquee match-up in the first round. But the Mighty Ducks ran the Foresters out the gym scoring a season high 100 points in a 100-55 victory. Douglass will play #1 seed Lake Clifton Monday. The Lakers dominated ACCE 70-23 in their playoffs opener. Lake Clifton also crushed Douglass in the regular season head-to-head by 27.

MARYLAND CLASS 2A

First round games in Class 2A for Baltimore Area schools went mostly chalk. All the high seeded teams took care of business against the lower seeds. 2A is possibly Baltimore’s strongest Class with 3 potential favorites to hoist the trophy in College Park. Patterson is the defending state champions but Baltimore County Champs New Town and Baltimore City runner-up Edmondson are capable of spoiling the Clippers trip to the finals.

MARYLAND CLASS 3A

City College looked impressive in their 3A South playoff opener against Digital Harbor. The Knights jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead and never looked back with a 73-50 win. The Knights shot well from behind the arc and held the Rams to only 23 first half points. City will travel to defending Champs Poly Monday for their second meeting of the year. The Engineers routed the Knights 76-41 during the regular season match-up.

MARYLAND CLASS 4A

Across the board, Class 4A is perceived to be the most volatile Class of the entire tournament. We can see a number of teams bringing home the hardware after the finals. Dulaney, Old Mill, Meade, and Broadneck give Baltimore Area Schools the best chance to win it all. But there’s a reason the madness begins in March.
