In the word of the great William Joseph Raftery “Onions”, was the first thought to come to mind after Poly’ Ian Wallace made his only points of the contest. Down 2 with 15 seconds to go, the 2020 small forward nailed the go ahead three-pointer to give the Engineers a 59-58 lead in front of a jam packed SECU Area crowd. But the game didn’t stop there. On the ensuing play, St Frances Jordan Toles was sent to the free-throw line after being fouled driving to the basket. Make 1 of 2 and the game is tied. Make 2 of 2 and the Panthers retake the lead. The two-sport standout missed both. But again the game wasn’t over.
Poly’s Brandon Murray, who had a game high 22 points, was fouled immediately after rebounding Toles’ missed free-throw. Murray had an opportunity to give the Engineers a 3 point lead, but missed the frontend of a 1 and 1.
Known for hitting big shots, the ball was in 2020 guard Ace Baldwin hands on the last possession. Earlier in the season, Baldwin knocked down the game winning jumper against Memphis East in the Chick-Fi-La Classic in South Carolina. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the outcome was different Saturday night. Baldwin missed a pull-up three pointer from top of the key and a floater in the lane as time ran out.
The big win for the Engineers avenged a 67-55 lost to St Frances last year. Poly improved to 12-4 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 21-4.
