It was evident from the lack of post-game celebration tonight, Wise (13-0) is on mission to win their 3rd straight Maryland State title. And for the third year in a row, Howard Lions (12-1) fell short to the Pumas in the Maryland Class 4A State playoffs 42-7. The Pumas dominated on both sides of the ball majority off the game. Wise’s senior running back John Oliver racked up over 100 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns in the fist half alone. Oliver would finish the game with a total 4 touchdowns in the contest. Howard’s junior running back Devin Dawkins was a beacon of light for the 4A North champions. Struggling to counter Wise’s defensive speed, Coach Ross Hannon put the ball in Dawkins hands who produced several big runs. But overall Howard had little answers offensively or defensively. Besides a first quarter Robby Porter 23 yard TD pass to Robert Agbai, Howard struggled to move the all inside Wise’s 20 yard line. Late in the 3rd quarter the Lions were able to move the ball inside the Pumas 10 yard line but a hit on Porter caused a fumble return by senior linebacker Christopher Rhodes for the final touchdown of the game.
Wise advance to play Quince Orchard (12-1) for a 2016 4A state final rematch at Navy on December 1st. The 3rd seed Cougars upset 2nd seed North Point tonight 40-21. Quince Orchard is looking to avenge a 42-7 shelling from Wise last year in the state final last year.
